「Chrome OSは大失敗になる」＝米InfoWorld

　僕なんかChrome OS搭載のネットブックを首を長くして待っている一人なんだけど、米InfoWorldのRandall C. KennedyさんがWhy Chrome OS will fail — big timeという記事を書いている。

Fatal flaw No. 1: The Linux foundationFirst, there’s the core architecture. A derivative of Linux, the Chrome OS builds on Linus Torvald’s popular open source foundation to create a lightweight, Web-oriented desktop environment. However, it also inherits that platform’s many warts, including spotty hardware compatibility.
致命的欠陥その１　リナックスベースであること。電源管理からディスプレーサポート、中途半端なドライバーなど、リナックスは非常にバグの多いOS.そこでグーグルは、すべてのハードウェアではなく、グーグルが認めた特定のデバイスにだけChrome OSの搭載を認めることにした。

Fatal flaw No. 2: The Web user interface　The "applications" running under the Chrome OS are really just interactive Web pages, with the Chrome browser’s tabs serving to separate and organize them visually on the screen. And though I can certainly appreciate the advantages of doing away with those heavy legacy OS windowing layers — Web content is lighterweight and easier to isolate from a security standpoint — it also serves to limit the environment’s overall utility.　The world won’t buy an inflexible OSAnd that’s where I believe the Chrome OS ultimately fails. In its effort to pare the traditional OS model down to the bone, Google has thrown out the one characteristic that made Windows and, to a lesser extent, Mac OS X and full-blown Linux successful: flexibility.
致命的欠陥その２　UIがブラウザそのものであること。無駄がないのはいいことだけど、全体の使い勝手が制限されることになる。柔軟性のないOSは、いずれだめになる。ウィンドウズにしろマックOS Xにしろ、その柔軟性が理由で成功している。

Simply put, the Chrome OS is too narrow. It assumes that the world is ready to give up the traditional personal computing paradigm and live full time in the cloud. In reality, most users prefer a hybrid existence, with some of their data and applications stored locally, and others — typically the freebies, like Gmail — hosted online.
Chrome OSの目指すことろが狭すぎるということ。世の中の人がすべてクラウドを求めていると考えているのだろうけど、実際のところ、データやアプリを、パソコンとクラウドの両方に持つハイブリッド型のほうが、多くの人のニーズに合っている。

The bottom line is that while there is virtually nothing that you’ll be able to do with the Chrome OS that you won’t be able to do equally well with Windows, there are literally millions of things that you can do with Windows today that you’ll likely never be able to do with the Chrome OS.
Chrome OSでできることでウィンドウズでできないことはほとんどないし、反対にウィンドウズでできる非常に多くのことがChrome OSではできない。

So don’t be surprised when you start hearing about early Chrome OS adopters trying to reformat their systems with Windows 7 Starter Edition. After all, people are easily distracted, and the Chrome OS already bores me to death.
Chrome OSを購入した人たちが、ウィンドウズをインストールしなおすということがあっても不思議ではない。わたしにとってChrome OSは、死にたくなるぐらい退屈なOSだ。

　うーん、言ってることは分からないでもない。僕の前回のエントリー「ネットブック使用後１年レビュー」に書いたように、仕事で特殊な使い方をするのなら、高性能のパソコンのほうがいい。メールをちょっとチェックするのなら、iPhoneのほうがいい。

　でもChrome OSの数秒で立ち上がる起動の速さはやはり魅力だし、フルキーボードもいい。イベントのツイッター実況なんかにはもってこいだと思う。値段が2万円ぐらいになる可能性もあるんだし、２台目パソコンとしての可能性は十分にある。
　それにgoogleのサービスの多くは今でも、ローカルにデータを持つことができて、ネット環境がなくても作業できて、ネット環境に入るとすぐに同期してくれるんじゃなかったっけ。
　要は使い方次第。パソコンがほとんどすべての人にとって不可欠なデバイスになる中で、その使い方も多様になってきている。みんながみんな、昔からパソコンを多用しているわれわれのような使い方をするわけではないと思う。
　Chrome OSが成功か失敗かは、Chrome OSで十分満足できる人がどの程度いるか、ということになると思う。この記事を書いたKennedyさんは、そんな人はほとんどいない、と考えている。でもわれわれ業界の人間は、一般ユーザーとちょっと違った感覚を持っていることが多い。われわれにはあまり魅力的ではないデバイスでも、一般ユーザーには十分魅力的になる可能性はある。いずれにせよ、Chrome OS搭載機が発売になる来年の年末商戦が楽しみだ。
