On June 11th, V-Sido for Smartphone, a technology designed by Wataru Yoshizaki, staff member at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, won the championship at the Infinity Venture Summit Launch Pad held in Sapporo, Japan. This technology allows simple control of a robot via smartphone touchscreen. Plans for commercialization are already progressing, and it seems that the day is soon approaching where iPhone-controlled robots will be lined up on store shelves.

According to Yoshizaki, all of the robot’s motions can be generated from the traces of a finger on the smartphone’s touchpanel. Multitouch support allows one to operate both arms of the robot freely using two fingers.

Even if the robot’s arms are whirring about, there is no chance of the robot falling over. This could be because the movement of the center of gravity is automatically calculated.

Operation by web-enabled PC is also feasible, Yoshizaki says, as the robot has an http server installed. Furthermore, as the iPhone does not support Flash, Yoshizaki is using HTML 5, thus making control possible through almost any smartphone, the iPhone included.

Watching the video below will probably be faster than explaining more.
